45 years ago, Cancún was taking its first steps in the Mexican tourism industry. Twenty years later it was at the top of the food chain and showed no signs of relenting. And it kept growing, and growing toward the south, bringing places like Playa del Carmen and Tulum to the international forefront.
One element that was under-represented: high-quality golf courses. Today you can enjoy over twenty 18-hole courses in the area that stretches from Cancun to Tulum, and with the help of local golfer José Dzib, we highlight some of the area’s stars, along with your home course here in Puerto Aventuras.
Puerto Aventuras Golf and Tennis Club

Mayakoba – El Camaleon
Designed by legendary Greg Norman, the Mayakoba-El Camaleón course is located inside the Mayakoba development, home to luxury hotel properties Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Rosewood. This 18-hole, par 72, 7000-yard course owes its name to the chameleon-like way its wide fairways wiggle through dense tropical foliage, mangroves and breathtaking beachside greens.
The Norman team incorporated underground caverns right into the course (one is right in the center of your first fairway), and the hole that gives the course its name is right alongside the Caribbean Sea. It’s a spectacular place to play and the only course in Mexico that celebrates a FEDEX Cup tournament, and is the only PGA tournament played in the Riviera Maya. The site also features the Jim McClean Golf School, well known in the US as a top-ranked instructional academy.

Playa Mujeres Golf Club
Out of the way and off the beaten track, the Greg Norman-designed Playa Mujeres Golf Club is a beautiful course to play. Set in the 930-acre Playa Mujeres resort development, the course is placed between the Caribbean Sea and the Chachmochuc Lagoon.
The occasional wayward crocodile has been known to visit the course, along with other assorted bird and wildlife, as you are set in the middle of tropical trees, grasses and sand. Your 16th hole is a stunning par four right near the beach, that while beautiful, can be challenging as you usually play against the wind here.
